The Institute for Democracy “Societas Civilis” Skopje

Институтот за Демократија "Социетас Цивилис" Скопје

The Macedonia-based Institute for Democracy “Societas Civilis” Skopje (IDSCS) is a non-governmental, non-partisan, non-profit think tank. It was established in 1999 by a group of intellectuals gathered around the ideas of democracy, solidarity and civil society. Long term objectives of the Institute are to work on balanced socio economic development, active civic engagement, and participative political culture. In this direction, IDSCS focuses its activities on rule of law, good governance, and multiethnic and multicultural coexistence. IDSCS' work is primarily based on sociometric research and project-based activities. The institute believes that human capital is a key precondition for positive social change. For this reason, it eagerly undertakes capacity building projects based on skills and knowledge transfer. IDSCS also maintains that societal improvement is directly linked to availability of resources for self-reflection. To make these resources accessible, ISDCS advocates policy recommendations and strives to enrich the public discourse through promotion of evidence-based policy, publishing and public events.

The Institute for Democracy was one of the first organizations to conduct public opinion surveys in the area of social sciences, providing the policy sector, the academic community, and the media with essential empirical and quantitative materials. Bearing this legacy and continuously working in thис field, IDSCS holds one of the largest survey databases in the country and is considered to be a valuable source of information for pоlicy makers, academics and politicians.

In a period when a deficit of knowledge, skills and competences of political actors affected institutional efficiency and effectiveness, the Institute provided more than 100 trainings for various political party members, thus enhancing the democratic process in Macedonia.

3 centers make up the Institute: The Center for European Integration (Center for European Policies), The Center for Democracy, and the Research Center.

The Institute also releases a number of publications, which include: The quarterly journal Political Thought/Политичка мисла; a number of political, social, and economic analyses (see the archive of these analyses here); and regular public opinion surveys (see the archive of these surveys here).
