International Summer School in Anthropology, Ethnography and Comparative Folklore of the Balkans

Summer School Programme

The summer school is divided into two sections, with different modules offered in each section. Between the two sections all participants will join a week-long field work excursion in Greece and Albania. Here are the titles of all possible courses in the summer school. Albanian Culture and Society in Ethnographic and Anthropological Analysis: A Critical Perspective;
Rituals, Symbols and Identities in Rural and Urban Contexts: Approaches from Folklore and Anthropology;
Doing Fieldwork: Theory, Method and the Production of Anthropological Knowledge;
The Political Anthropology of the Crisis;
Soundscapes of the Balkans: Flocks and Local Feasts, Rock-Bands and Radio Waves;
The Anthropology of Dance.

The fieldwork module, Fieldwork Practice on both Sides of the Greek-Albanian Border, is a requirement for all participants.

The requirements

Eligible to apply are undergraduate, MA and doctoral students from any Balkan, European or other country. Deadline for the submission of application and the reference letter is May the 15th 2012. All applicants will be notified by the end of May 2012.

Certification

Certificate of attendance:
A Certificate of Attendance will be provided to the Summer School participants. Prerequisites are:
1) The regular attendance of the selected courses and other academic activities during the School
2) The participation in the course "Ethnographic research in border areas"
3) The presentation of the ethnographic exercise results at the last day of the School

Costs

An estimated fee of 250 EURO is necessary for admission. This amount is intended to cover the travel and accommodation costs of the lecturers and guest speakers. The fee should be paid upon registration in Konitsa.
Accommodation, meals and travel expenses during the Summer School (for attending activities related to the School) will be covered by the municipality of Konitsa. Any travel costs for coming to and leaving Konitsa must be paid by the participants themselves.
