Beyond the Cold War: New Directions in Soviet, Central and Eastern European Cinema Studies

Venue: Essex (United Kingdom)
Period: May 1-2, 2010

Program

The conference aims to offer an analysis of new and emerging approaches to the study of cinema under the conditions of State Socialism in the former Soviet Union and Central and Eastern Europe.

Many previous studies of the relationship between cinemas and State Socialism were undertaken by scholars of Cold war, but, twenty years after that war's end, it is necessary to analyze the influence of the collapse of Soviet power in the approaches of scholars both from East and West. At the same time it is important to focus the attention on  themes drawn from neighbouring disciplines and on the opening up of new sources within the former Soviet Union and Central and Eastern Europe.

In this context the conference is aimed on one hand at consolidating this emerging dialogue between scholars of different areas and disciplines, and on the other at examining the variety of forms and modalities of cinemas under the conditions of State Socialism.
