A new era in the Balkans

Venue: Brussels (Belgium)
Period: Dec. 8, 2009

The conference

The 2009 European Policy Summit will be the 10th in Friends of Europe's series on the Balkans. It will bring together senior officials from Balkan national governments, the Commission's DG Enlargement, the European Parliament and business and NGO leaders to discuss pressing issues in the arenas of Balkan accession and economic realities.

The one-day summit will focus on the steps needed to overcome political obstacles to EU membership and continue reforms in the Balkans, how the national governments are cooperating to take ownership of the stabilisation process and how they may more strongly encourage involvement and decision-making on the local level.

The summit sessions

EU Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn will open the debate.
Two plenary sessions in the morning will be complemented by a two-session economic roundtable in the afternoon.

Plenary sessions:

  • Session I: Making 2010-2020 the Decade of the Balkans
  • Session II: Strengthening ownership: promoting regional cooperation and enhancing local capacities

Economic roundtable:

  • Session III: Do the economic storm clouds have a silver lining for the Balkans? At last, a 'big idea' from the EU's institutions?
  • Session IV: The challenge of infrastructure: can Balkan states share projects?
