Franciscans in the history of the Balkan peoples

The conference

In the occasion of the VIII centenary of the foundation of the Franciscan order, the Centro Interdipartimentale di Studi Balcanici e Internazionali of the University "Ca' Foscari" of Venice organises the international meeting "Franciscans in the history of the Balkan peoples".

Divided into two sessions, the event will analyze the presence and the activities, both religious and literary, of the Franciscan Friars in the countries of the Balkan peninsula, with particular focus on Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Bosnia, Croatia, and Slovenia.

The programme

The first session of the meeting will take place on Friday, November 13th starting at 2.30 p.m. addressing the following topics:

  • The franciscans in the Ottoman Empire
  • Important moments of the Franciscan presence in Romania
  • The franciscans and Catholicism in Bulgaria in the XVII-XIX centuries
  • Blasius Kleiner: a Franciscan travelling through the Balkans
 

The second session will take place on Saturday, November 14th starting at 9.30 a.m. developing the following subjects:

  • The fransiscans in Albania
  • Literary activity of the Franciscans in Bosnia and Croatia
  • The franciscans in nowadays Croatia
  • The franciscans in Slovenia
  • The franciscans and Serbia in the 13th century: cultural intersections between East and West
