Mediation and Other Methods to Foster Democratic Dialogue

Period: June 9-20, 2008
Location: Budapest
Application deadline: Feb. 14, 2008 (for scholarship applications) or May 14, 2008 (for fee-paying applications)

Course outline

Through lecture, discussion, demonstration and role-plays, students will be introduced to mediation and facilitation theory and skills and examine the impact of culture and context on the consensus-building approach adopted. The course also will examine a variety of strategies to foster and support democratic and constructive dialogue, particularly focusing on "high-conflict" situations involving inter-ethnic tensions.
Examples will focus on both civil and criminal mediation models and scenarios from both the United States and Central and Eastern Europe, including efforts in Central and Eastern Europe to promote meaningful democratic dialogue in times of national and international crisis.

Eligibility

The program encourages applications from junior and middle career faculty as well as doctoral students at law schools or faculties of social science and public administration in the CEE region, as well as American law students.
Additionally, course targets include academics and professionals in psychology, social work, public policy, political science, government and labor relations.
All applicants have to demonstrate a strong command of spoken and written English to be able to participate actively in discussions at seminars and workshops

How to apply

Application forms are encouraged to be submitted through the on-line registration system.
In addition to the completed application form, the following supporting documents are requested to be sent by regular mail:

  • CV (with a list of publications if any)
  • A Statement of Purpose
  • For academics: a research proposal or an English language article/research paper in progress
  • For practitioners who are currently not involved in research: a project proposal, or a short case study or a country report in the applicant's field of activity
  • One Letter of Recommendation
 

Attachments should be sent to the CEU Summer University Office by regular mail postmarked no later than February 14, 2008 for scholarship applications or May 14, 2008 for fee-paying applications.
