Global Business from the Local Perspective

Period: July 21 - Aug. 08, 2008.

The course outline

The course is offered in the English language. There will be 39 contact hours in the classroom. In addition, in the afternoons there will be meetings with Estonian and international businessmen and field-trips to various business establishments (Banks, consulting firms, industrial enterprises).
Upon successful completion the participants will receive Tartu University's Certificate of Completion and an Academic Transcript. The course is worth 6 ECTS.

The topics

During the first week, participants will investigate about "What makes CEE countries so different?" covering topics such as the economic transformation in CEE countries, the privatization in CEEC, the labor markets in CEEC, the case of Estonia as a success story and money and banking in CEEC.

During the second week, the main issue will be "How to Make Business in Estonia and in the Baltics?", and the topics that will be covered will be the business environment in Estonia (focussing both the government approach and case-studies of two international companies), the fiscal policy and taxes in Estonia, the organizational culture in the Baltics and the Baltics as a gateway between the East and the West.

During the third week, students will deepen the subject throught the "European Dimension", covering topics such as the innovation in European countries, the demographic changes in global economy, the European labor markets, the European social model migration and the free movement of labor, and the convergence, changes in trade and FDI between the EU and the new member states.
