After Empire: the Collapse of Communism and beyond

Location: Tallinn and Tartu (Estonia), St. Petersburg (Russia), Kiev (Ukraine)

The program

The program in Estonia will include lectures on the Soviet collapse from the Baltic perspective, the issue of the Russian-speaking minority and the challenges of economic transition and jusicial reform. Whereas visits to the Parliament and National Court are part of the academic program, cultural program will also include visits to Estonian museums and city tours of Tallinn and Tartu.

The program in Russia will include lectures on the relations between Russia and the West, the northern dimension of the Russian foreign policy, Russian civil society and the problems of arms control. Meetings with officials at St. Petersburg City Goverment, representatives of a media firm and tour of an industrial factory are part of the academic program. The cultural program will include excursions to the city museums and a city tour.

The program in Kiev will include lectures on the history of Ukraine, the period of transition, the Ukrainian political system and the relationship between Ukraine and the international community.
Meetings with Ukrainian politicians and foreign diplomats are part of the academic program, whereas the cultural program will include opera and theater, a city tour and a optional visit to Chernobyl.

Costs and applications

The program fee is 1985 EUR and covers tuition, accommodation, cultural programs and transportation (including travel to Russia and Ukraine).
