Theatralia

Theatralia, ‘the Revue of Contemporary Thought on Theatre Culture’ (ISSN 1803-845X), is peer-reviewed scholarly journal issued by the Department of Theatre Studies, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University in Brno, registered in the list of peer-reviewed scholarly journals by the Ministry of Culture under the no E 18717.

The current journal follows on the previous almanac Sborník prací Filozofické fakulty brněnské univerzity (SPFFBU), published by the Faculty of Arts from 1998 to 2001. The journal fell into the SPFFBU series Q: Theatralia et Cinematographica (ISSN 1212-3358) until 2001, when it got split into two – one dealing with film and the other with theatre. From 2009, the graphic layout of the journal underwent a series of improvements to meet new requirements applied to modern scholarly publications.

The journal is published twice a year, regularly altering the Czech and English edition. Each issue focuses on a particular topic from history or theory of theatre in the section called ‘Yorick’, which constitutes the major thematic focus of the journal. The ‘Yorick’ section can become, if needed, the only section included in the issue. Articles on different subjects are grouped in section called ‘Spektrum’. Both of these sections are subject to a peer reviewing process.

The aim of the journal is to map theatre in its varied language and generic forms regardless of time and territory by means of publishing scholarly articles, reviews and archival materials of all kinds. Besides the already mentioned ‘Yorick’ (thematic articles) and ‘Spektrum’ (varia), other regular sections include ‘Depeše’ (Despatches; reports from various events connected to theatre and/or drama, especially conferences), ‘Orientace’ (Orientation; critical reviews of recently published volumes on theatre and/or drama), ‘Yoriczek’ (Small Yorick; abbreviated versions of successful BA and MA theses), ‘Archiv’ (Archive; unpublished archival materials, often accompanied by a study summarizing the aims and achievements of the research), and ‘Host’ (Guest). Included from the issue 2015/1, the guest section presents interviews with renowned theatre scholars, theoreticians, and university teachers both from theCzechRepublicand abroad. The focus on Czech personalities is, besides other reasons, driven by the awareness of ephemerality and elusiveness of all human achievements, especially those connected with theatre; if nothing else, they can be captured and recorded by means of oral history.

The editorial board reserves the right to change the issue structure in order to fulfil immediate special requirements and practical needs. For example, the concentration on a specific topic of scholarly interest can result in excluding one or several sections (most commonly the ‘Spektrum’) to give more room to the ‘Yorick’ section.

Although the journal is published byMasarykUniversity, it is open to contributions from all Czech, as well as foreign departments, the only prerequisite for publication being scholarly qualities of the given article.
