Summer School of Serbian Language and Culture

Location: Valjevo, Serbia
Period: 14. July - 3. August 2007

If you wish to learn Serbian and know about the Serbs and their culture, Serbian Language and Culture Workshop is just the place for you. 
The program is unique because it offers not only language classes but also includes important elements of popular and high academic culture. During their stay students can have a lot of contacts with local people, their lifestyle and can go on many excursions all over Serbia.
They can also learn about local institutions and the ways they operate in specific circumstances.
In short, it is a real language and cultural immersion. It is all part of making the Serbian Language and Culture Workshop currently the most popular school of Serbian for foreigners in Serbia. 
The programs are designed and carried out by experts from Belgrade University, the biggest and most prominent educational institution in the country, and by experts from the Serbian Language Institute, which is part of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
The school works with students at all levels of language proficiency. 

 

Program

By attending the course it will be possible to gain new and improve the current language abilities.
After a placement test taken upon the arrival students will be divided into groups according to their knowledge. There are four groups: beginners, intermediate, advanced and proficiency.
Each group will have an appropriate syllabus, a language instructor, and will work separately from other groups. The emphasis is on developing communicative skills.
The theoretic, i.e. systematic aspect of the language is presented in the ways that are most suitable to the needs of every respective level.
Classes are held on weekdays from 9:00 to 12:35.
Culture seminar comprises workshops and lectures on various subjects, such as:
Workshops: Serbian folk singing, Serbian folk dancing, Serbian folk cuisine, Serbian national theater.
Lectures: Serbian cultural history, Religion of the Serbs, Old crafts in Serbia, History of Serbia in the 20th century, Serbian language, Serbian fine arts, Serbian architecture.
These workshops and lectures are held on weekdays from 14:00 to 17:30.
Field work also possible.
