Description

International conference „Jewish elites and Jewish community leaders during the Second World War (1939-1945)” is organized by the Institute of National Remembrance in cooperation with the Institute of Jewish Studies at the Jagiellonian University and the Galicia Jewish Museum in Kraków. The main goal of the conference is to discuss the functioning of Jewish elites and Jewish community officials during World War II. It is an attempt to find answers to questions of the continuity of pre-war military elite patterns and changes resulting from the reality of war and occupation. The conference also seeks to define the term „Jewish elites”, as well as to review the research already carried out on this topic. One of the most important goals of the conference is to describe a comprehensive approach to the history and the role of elites and Jewish community leaders in the said period by presenting their achievements, attitudes, behavior, mentality, and the mechanisms which defined their acts.
We hope this conference will be a great opportunity to broaden the horizons of scholars by interdisciplinary research in the field. We are particularly interested in a broader comparative perspective applied to specific topics related to history, e.g. sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, law, ethics and social psychology.

Eligible topics

We propose to adopt a comprehensive research perspective that would include the following issues:

  • an attempt at reviewing research in the field
  • defining the notion of „Jewish elites”
  • archival sources
  • comparative analysis of pre-war and wartime Jewish elites taking into account their financial status, as well as geographical, social, religious, cultural determinants
  • the status of Jewish elites and community leaders throughout the war
  • the creation of „new” wartime elites
  • chairmen and members of the Judenräte and Ordnungsdienst as examples of wartime elites
  • internal diversity among the elites (also in terms of space: ghetto and camp elites)
  • customs and daily life of the elites during World War II
  • social and cultural activities of Jewish elites and of Jewish community leaders during the occupation
  • the question of collaboration of Jewish leaders and elites during the Second World War (the German Reich, the Generalgouvernement, the USSR)
  • the participation of Jewish elites and community leaders in the structures of PPR (Polish Workers' Party), GL-AL (People's Guard; People's Army)
  • survival strategies of Jewish elites
  • Jewish elites and leaders in ŻZW (Jewish Military Union), ŻOB (Jewish Combat Organization)
  • Jewish elites and leaders in the structures of the Polish Underground State
  • non-Jews offering support to Jewish elites and community leaders
  • destruction of the Jewish elites under German and Soviet occupation
  • post-war trials and seeking social justice
  • the fate of the Jewish elites after World War II
  • Jewish elites and community leaders in the eyes of Holocaust survivors

The conference will be held in Polish and English (simultaneous translation will be provided).
