Description

The Aleksanteri Institute (University of Helsinki) and the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Russian Studies, "Choices of Russian Modernisation" will hold the 14th Annual International Aleksanteri Conference on 22-24 October 2014 in Helsinki, Finland.

This year the conference, entitled "Restructuring State and Society in Russia" aims to examine the intersections of and interrelationships between state and society in Russia and other post-Soviet and post-Communist countries in diverse theoretical and comparative perspectives - with the focus on critical issues of political, economic, and societal developments and in-between macro and micro levels of analysis.

Eligible topics

To stimulate topics for debates and the formation of panels, the programme committee suggests, for instance, the following sub-themes for consideration:

  • Political regimes and patterns of governance
  • Public administration and the (un)rule of law
  • Social policy, welfare and human development
  • Religion, nationalism and migration
  • Civil society, collective action and the state
  • Media, communication, and the public sphere
  • National developments and international experience

The working language of the conference is English. Unfortunately no translation can be provided.
There is no registration fee. Participants are requested to make their own arrangements for travel and accommodation and cover the costs related to participation.
Participants and observers who do not wish to give a paper or organise a panel or a workshop are also welcome to take part in the Conference. There is no registration fee but registration will be required.

Guidelines for submission

Paper proposals:
Individual paper abstracts of max. 300 words are invited until May 15, 2014.
Please submit your abstract via abstract submission form.
Notification of acceptance will be sent by e-mail to the accepted applicants by June 19, 2014.

Panel Proposals:
Proposals for panels of max. 500 words are invited until May 15, 2014.
Panels should consist of three panelists, chair and discussant.
Please submit your panel proposal via panel proposal submission form.
Notification of acceptance will be sent by e-mail to the accepted applicants by June 19, 2014.
