Putin’s Russia in the Wake of the Cold War

Conference venue: Canberra, ACT, Australia
Period: 24th-26th August, 2016
Deadline for submitting abstracts: 1st May, 2016

Description of the Conference

The Australian National University (ANU)’s Humanities Research Centre invites proposals for papers, panels and roundtables for its conference ‘Putin’s Russia in the Wake of the Cold War’.  The conference will be held on the 24th-26th August, 2016 and will be based at the university in Canberra, Australia.
The primary aim of the conference is to help promote timely, sophisticated and wide-ranging engagement with the received wisdom about the nature and intentions of post-Soviet Russia under President Vladimir Putin.  Its aim too is to promote a transnational conversation inclusive of influential Russian and Russia-based researchers.
The conference will be officially launched by Professor the Hon Gareth Evans AC QC Chancellor the Australian National University.  The keynote speaker will be the eminent scholar, Richard Sakwa, Professor of Russian and European Politics at the University of Kent, UK.  Professor Sakwa’s books span the period from the collapse of the Soviet Union and the rise of Putin and the oligarchs, to the conflict in Ukraine. His most recent work is a fascinating compilation of sociological research, much of it by Russians themselves, on the lives of the people under Putin’s governance.

Eligible topics for the conference

Papers, panels and roundtables are welcome in the following areas:

  • Perceptions of contemporary Russia; the evolution of East-West foreign policy, Crimea, Ukraine and the Middle East, regional geopolitics, the potential consolidation of a new Cold War.
  • Historical perspectives; the legacy of the Cold War, both within Russia and globally; nationalism/patriotism/eurasionism/antiwesternism.
  • Post-Soviet Russians- demographics, polls and social profiling, the intellectuals/ideology/religion; democratisation/authoritarianism/the structure of governance/corruption/human rights.
