The Death of Tito, the Death of Yugoslavia

by Raif Dizdarevic

book cover

The memories of politicians of Ex-Jugoslavia have been particularly profitable these last years.
However, this book of Raif Dizdarevic stands out in a particular way for two reasons: first of all it is written by a bosnian author, the first to write about the fall of Jugoslavia, among who- Serbs, Croats, Slovenes - have tried until today on the issue.
Secondly, and always in distinction from other similar attempts, these memories cover a whole decade and not only the last phases that have precede the fall of the country.
The choice is the proper one and the reader finds in the pages of Dizdarevic the most relevant and controversial events that have led Jugoslavia towards catastrophe since the last days of Tito.
The political suicide of a State is represented in relation with the communist power mechanisms that Dizdarevic has known perfectly since the times he was a partisan and then as the president of Bosnia, president of the federal parliament, minister of foreign affairs and in the end as the president of Jugoslav Federation.

Raif Dizdarevic was the President of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
After that he became the speaker of the Yugoslav parliament. Between 1984-1988 he was Foreign Minister and in 1988 he was made president of Yugoslavia.
Raif Dizdarevic was a diplomat for several years before assuming high political office in his own country. In the 1960s he spent four years at the Yugoslav embassy in Prague, and his Czech remains perfect ever since.
