Book's frontpage

This volume, divided into five chapter deals with the intricate and chaotic events that agitated Russia from May until September 1999. These developments culminated with the Russian invasion of Chechnya of October 1 and the rise of a little known former KGB foreign operative into the post of Russian Prime Minister and later, in March 2000. of Russian President.
The first chapter of the book takes into consideration the political struggle taking place at the top in Russia between May and August of 1999 which culminated in an incursion, in early August, by armed Islamic separatists into the Republic of Dagestan.
The second chapter describes the events surrounding the two Moscow terror bombings occurring on 9 and 13 September 1999 which claimed the lives of 224 residents of the Russian capital and prepared the psychological and political ground for a full-bore invasion of Chechnya.
In the third chapter, the author devotes his attention to the so-called Ryazan Incident, which took place on 22 September 1999, during which eyewitnesses observed serving officers belonging to elite units of the FSB special forces allegedly place a live bomb in the basement of an apartment building in that Russian city.
The detonation of a powerful truck bomb outside of an apartment house in Buinaksk, Dagestan on 4 September 1999 which took the lives of fifty-eight innocent victims is analyzed.
Finally, the fifth and last chapter deals with the explosion of 16 September 1999, when a truck bomb in the city of Volgdonsk in southern Russia killed eighteen persons and seriously wounded eighty-nine.
