The Resurgence of Nationalism in Times of Crisis. The Yugoslav Collapse, the EU's Uncertain Future and the prospect of Reconciliation in the Balkans

On November 22, 2011, Professor Stefano Bianchini gave a lecture on “The Resurgence of Nationalism in Times of Crisis. The Yugoslav Collapse, the EU's Uncertain Future and the prospect of Reconciliation in the Balkans” at the Johns Hopkins University, Bologna Center.

During his presentation, Prof. Bianchini drew a parallel between the Yugoslav crisis of the 1980s and the EU crisis started in 2005/2008, pointing at the similarities between the two systems and at their common flaws. Both the EU and the Yugoslav state in its final phase are characterized by an intergovernmental model  of governance, which raises several decision-making problems. In the case of the EU, its crisis was marked by the failure of the Constitutional Treaty in 2005 and the beginning of the economic crisis in 2008. Prof. Bianchini finished his presentation by raising questions related to the future of the EU integration process and the challenges it faces in the Balkan context.

Prof. Stefano Bianchini was also interviewed and answered the following questions:

  1. What lessons can the EU learn from the intergovernmental system in the former Yugoslavia?
  2. What message does Cameron’s and Merkel’s statement about the failure of multiculturalism in Europe send to a country like Bosnia?
  3. What is the role of identities and ethnicities in a community and how is this concept expressed in the realities of the former Yugoslavia?
