PECOB's Volumes

This section collects original scientific documents such as Master's theses and doctoral dissertations, selected through peer review process and published online as "PECOB's Volumes". Each volume is assigned an ISBN code.

The volumes may focus on the political, economic, historical, social or cultural aspects of a specific country or region covered by PECOB, that is Central Eastern Europe and the Balkans, considered as a single case-study or from a comparative perspective.
The Portal on Central Eastern and Balkan Europe has already published two PECOB's Volumes. The first is a selection of contributions in Slavic Languages and Literatures from the ICCEES Congress held in Stockholm in 2010. In this volume, most contributions focus on Russian literature of the XIX-XX century, Jewish-Russian poetry and other topics such as translation, media and culture.
The second volume is a collection of Master's dissertations that include the works of three students whose academic curricula demonstrate a deep knowledge and understanding of political and cultural processes of Central Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Giorgio Comai's thesis deals with change of power in countries belonging to the Community of Independent States, while Irene Dioli's work addresses queer theatrical performance and social action in Belgrade. Finally, Tatiana Warner analyze social corporate responsibility in Hungary and Macedonia.

    Ever since the beginning of the transition period from a state-planned to a market-oriented economy, Hungary has been a frontrunner in attracting FDI in the Eastern Central European region.

     

  4. Macro-regional Strategies in Territorial Cooperation: The future of European Regional Policy

    This thesis aims to contribute to the current debate on the new concept of EU macro-regional strategies. The objective of this work is to investigate the potentialities of these political strategies, to analyse the importance of the pre-existing structures they emerged from, to highlight the peculiarities that distinguish them from other forms of territorial cooperation so far known within the framework of the EU Regional Policy and to examine all the critical aspects.

     

  5. Le Minoranze come “Ponti e Fossati” tra Stati e Popoli: il Caso della Polonia dal 1919 al 1947

    Il presente volume si propone di analizzare, in un arco temporale ben preciso, quali siano stati i rapporti tra lo stato polacco e le minoranze nazionali contenute nel suo territorio al fine di arricchire la semplificata immagine della Polonia come vittima ed eroina della propria storia e di ricostruire una narrazione più equilibrata e critica che tenga conto anche delle pagine nere della storia polacca.

     

  6. Post-Yugoslav Film and Literature Production: an Alternative to Mainstream Political and Cultural Discourse

    Drawing upon studies which emphasized and conceptualized the existence of political and cultural alternatives to the emerging nationalistic cultures in ex-Yugoslav societies, this study aims at following those anti-nationalist artistic records in newly formed post-Yugoslav states.

     

  7. The rise of political extremism in Bulgaria - The political party “Ataka”

    The aim of the thesis is to depict the phenomenon of the rise of the political extremism in Bulgaria after the year 2005, represented in the political party “Ataka”. The phenomenon itself is closely related to the appearance of populist discourses, after the victory of former tsar of Bulgaria, Simeon Sakskoburgotski, and his party at the Parliamentary elections in 2005.

    The goal of the dissertation is by studying consumption patterns, to establish the general and specific characteristics and trends of Bulgarian and Japanese society, the place and role of their middle strata in these two consumer societies.

     

  10. Searching for political business cycles in Albania

    (published in: Sep, 2013)

    It is widely believed in Albania as elsewhere, that governments may use the means they possess, including economic policy instruments, to enhance the chances of reelection. The government may engage in expansionary economic policies prior to elections, increasing output and decreasing unemployment, in order to please voters, creating this way Political Business Cycles (PBC). No research has been conducted previously on PBC in Albania, to best of our knowledge.
