Description of the Conference/Event

Published by Routledge, "Sport in Society" is an academic journal dedicated to the critical study of sport, by scholars from across the humanities and social sciences.

Eligible topics for the conference

This special issue is open to a range of topics (comparative or focussed on particular national or regional contexts) including, but not limited to:

  • The role of sport in aggressive nationalism
  • Sport and criminality
  • Hooliganism and sport in South-Eastern Europe
  • Sport and ‘new power elites’
  • Sport, security and safety
  • The relationship between sport and religion
  • Media coverage of sport and sporting events (especially the representation of conflict)
  • Sport, reconciliation and social policy
  • Women, sport and reconciliation
  • The development of regional sport leagues for conflict resolution
  • The role of emerging sport (including rugby league and cricket)
  • The role of sportspeople in the promotion of sport and reconciliation

Proposals on other relevant topics are welcome.

Guidelines for submission

Contributions are welcome from both established and early career researchers in academic fields including, but not confined to: sociology, social and cultural policy studies, political science, political economy, media and cultural studies, social anthropology, gender studies, peace studies, criminology and security studies.
 
Abstracts of 250-350 words must be submitted to Dr Fiona Skillen at fskillen@uclan.ac.u
