Book's frontpage

Twenty years after the end of the Cold War, the history of the cinema industry offers a privileged perspective for a study of socio-political, economic, and cultural transformations in South East Europe. The movie industry seems to have shaped, more than any other, the imaginaries of Balkan societies.

Through the individual memories produced by the historical discontinuities the protagonists of this crucial economic sector experienced, the research seeks to investigate the transformation of the cinema industry as well as the region's socio-political developments.

In the light of both the individual narratives and the study of primary and secondary sources, the essay portraits the complex relationship between the cinema industry and the political regimes, the radical crisis of the nineties, and the internationalisation process of the 21st century, highlighting the changing relationship between a profession and the wider social context.
