Ukraine: Language, Culture, Identity

Description of the Conference

This Conference is organizad by the Mykola Zerov Centre for Ukrainian Studies, Monash University, in association with the Ukrainian Studies Association of Australia and the Shevchenko Scientific Society in Australia. In the northern summer of 2012 attempts by the majority party in Ukraine’s parliament to modify the country’s language law so as to enable Russian to receive official status as a regional language focused public opinion, triggering demonstrations and vociferous political confrontations.
 
Registration will be open until 1 February 2013. Register with the payment online. Alternatively, for payment by cheque, download the registration form (doc) and mail it, with payment, to the conference address.
 
The Conference Dinner will be held on the evening of Saturday 16 February.
The General Meeting of the Ukrainian Studies Association of Australia will be held on the afternoon of Sunday 17 February.
The General Meeting of the Shevchenko Scientific Society Australia will be held on the afternoon of Sunday 17 February.

Eligible topics for the conference

  • The most recent illustrations of the unresolved and controversial nature of Ukrainian linguistic;
  • Cultural and national identity throughout the country’s modern and pre-modern history;
  • Ukrainian studies.

The objective of this conference is to enlighten this kind of topics as a contemporary and historical issue from the perspectives of various scholarly disciplines. Papers will be of 20 minutes duration.

Guidelines for submission

Offers of papers should contain the author’s name and title, the author’s institutional affiliation, the author’s electronic and postal addresses, the title of the proposed paper, an abstract (150-200 words). The offer of paper should be prepared as a Word file and sent as an e-mail attachment to Mr Andrew Radion of the Conference Organising Committee. All offers of papers will be acknowledged. Notices of acceptance or otherwise will be e-mailed as soon as possible and no later than 7 December 2012.
